What is HTTP 402?

This status code was originally reserved for future digital payment protocols that never materialized in the standard. It has no standardized behavior or convention, though some services use it informally to indicate that a paid subscription or credit balance is required to access the resource. Some APIs use it to signal that a free tier limit has been reached or a payment method is needed.

• A subscription or paid plan is required to access the resource or API endpoint
• A usage quota or credit balance has been exhausted and payment is needed
