What is HTTP 410?

This status code tells the client that the target resource is no longer available at the server and this condition is expected to be permanent. Unlike 404, which is ambiguous about whether the absence is temporary, 410 explicitly signals that the resource was intentionally removed and no forwarding address is available. Search engines treat 410 as a stronger signal than 404, deindexing the URL faster.

Common Causes

• A product, article, or page was deliberately removed with no replacement
• An API endpoint was deprecated and permanently shut down
• A user account or profile was deleted and should no longer be accessible
• Expired promotional or time-limited content that was intentionally removed

How to Fix

• Remove links to this URL from your site, sitemaps, and navigation
• If a replacement exists, use a 301 redirect instead of 410
• Update any external references or bookmarks, as this URL will not return
• For SEO purposes, use 410 over 404 when you want search engines to deindex the URL quickly
