What is HTTP 302?

This status code indicates that the requested resource temporarily resides at a different URI given in the Location header. Unlike 301, the client should continue using the original URI for future requests because the redirect is temporary. Historically, browsers changed POST requests to GET when following 302 redirects, which led to the creation of 303 and 307 for clarity. Search engines generally do not transfer full ranking signals for temporary redirects.

Common Causes

• A page is temporarily unavailable and users are sent to an alternative location
• A/B testing or feature flags routing users to different page versions
• Login flows that redirect users to a sign-in page before returning them to the original URL
• Geolocation-based routing sending users to a region-specific version of the site

How to Fix

• Continue using the original URL for future requests, as the redirect is temporary
• If the redirect should be permanent, change it to a 301 to preserve SEO value
• If POST data must be preserved, consider using 307 Temporary Redirect instead
• Check that the Location header points to a valid, accessible destination
