What is HTTP 303?

This status code directs the client to retrieve the response from a different URI using a GET request, regardless of the original request method. It is commonly used after a POST operation to redirect the client to a result page, preventing form resubmission if the user refreshes the page. This implements the Post/Redirect/Get (PRG) pattern, which is a fundamental web development best practice.

Common Causes

  • A form submission completed and the user is redirected to a confirmation or results page
  • A POST or PUT operation finished and the server directs the client to view the created resource
  • The Post/Redirect/Get pattern preventing duplicate form submissions on browser refresh

How to Fix

  • Follow the redirect using a GET request to the URL in the Location header
  • No fix needed if you see this after a form submission; it is correct behavior
  • If you need the request method preserved, use 307 instead of 303
