What is HTTP 201?

This status code indicates that the request was fulfilled and resulted in one or more new resources being created. The newly created resource is typically identified by a URI returned in the Location header or within the response body. It is most commonly returned in response to POST requests that create new records, users, files, or other entities. The server confirms that the creation was successful and the new resource is available.

Defined in RFC 9110

Common Causes

• A POST request created a new record in a database or API
• A file upload completed and the file was saved on the server
• A user registration or account creation request succeeded

How to Fix

• No fix needed; the resource was created successfully
• Check the Location header for the URI of the newly created resource
• If creation failed, look for 4xx or 5xx errors in subsequent requests to the new resource
