202 Accepted

The request was accepted for processing but the processing is not yet complete.

What is HTTP 202?

This response indicates that the server has accepted the request for processing, but the work has not been completed yet. The request might or might not eventually be acted upon, as it could be rejected during actual processing. It is commonly used for asynchronous operations where the server queues a task and responds immediately. The client may need to poll a status endpoint or wait for a callback to learn the final outcome.

Defined in RFC 9110

Common Causes

  • A background job or task was queued for later processing
  • An email, notification, or report was scheduled for delivery
  • A long-running data processing operation was initiated asynchronously

How to Fix

  • No fix needed; poll the provided status endpoint to track progress
  • Implement a callback or webhook to receive notification when processing completes
  • If the operation never completes, check server logs for processing errors
