205 Reset Content

The request succeeded and the client should reset the document view or form.

What is HTTP 205?

This status code tells the client that the request was successfully processed and the client should reset the view that triggered the request. For example, after submitting a form, the browser should clear all form fields back to their default state. Unlike 204, which says keep the current view, 205 explicitly asks the client to refresh or reset its interface. The response must not include a body.

Defined in RFC 9110

Common Causes

  • A form submission succeeded and the server wants the form cleared for new input
  • A data entry operation completed and the interface should reset for the next entry
  • An editing operation finished and the editor should return to its initial state

How to Fix

  • No fix needed; implement client-side logic to reset the form or view on this response
  • If the form is not resetting, verify your client code handles 205 responses properly
  • Consider using 200 with a response body if you need to show confirmation data
