305 Use Proxy

The requested resource must be accessed through the proxy specified in the Location header.

What is HTTP 305?

This status code was defined to indicate that the requested resource is only available through a proxy, whose address is provided in the Location header field. Due to security concerns about in-band proxy configuration, this status code has been deprecated and is no longer used by modern browsers or HTTP clients. It was considered a security risk because a malicious server could redirect traffic through an attacker-controlled proxy.

Common Causes

  • Legacy server configurations that attempted to enforce proxy usage
  • Historical network setups where certain resources required proxy access
  • This code is essentially never encountered in modern web traffic

How to Fix

  • This code is deprecated; do not implement or rely on it in new systems
  • If encountered, configure the proxy manually in your client or network settings
  • Replace with proper network-level proxy configuration or use 307/308 redirects
