What is HTTP 423?

This WebDAV status code indicates that the target resource is locked and the requested method cannot be applied to it. WebDAV uses locks to prevent multiple users from editing the same file simultaneously. The lock may have been placed by another user or process, or the request may lack the required lock token. The response body should contain information about who holds the lock and when it might be released.

Common Causes

• Another user has an exclusive write lock on the file or resource
• A previous editing session did not properly release its lock
• The request is missing the required lock token in the If header
• An automated process holds a lock on the resource for batch processing

How to Fix

• Wait for the current lock holder to release the lock, or request they unlock the resource
• Include the correct lock token in the If header if you are the lock owner
• If the lock is stale, ask an administrator to forcibly remove it
• Implement proper lock management in your WebDAV client to acquire and release locks correctly
