424 Failed Dependency

What is HTTP 424?

This WebDAV status code indicates that the method could not be performed on the resource because the requested action depended on another action that failed. When a batch operation has dependencies between sub-operations, and an earlier operation fails, subsequent dependent operations receive this status. The client should look at the failed dependency to understand and resolve the root cause.

Defined in RFC 4918

Common Causes

• A WebDAV COPY or MOVE failed because a prerequisite operation on a related resource failed
• A batch operation where an earlier step's failure cascaded to dependent steps
• A PROPPATCH request where one property change failed, causing dependent changes to also fail

How to Fix

• Identify and fix the root failure that caused the dependency cascade
• Check the multi-status response to find which original operation failed
• Retry the entire batch operation after resolving the underlying issue
• Break complex operations into independent steps to reduce dependency chains
